THE
SOUND
Moneyshot
is a hard rockin', booty sockin', funky punk-a-billy, good-time
band... otherwise known to many as "The American Boogie Gods".
Moneyshot was founded as an energy outlet by four key members
of the eight-piece original ska band, Idiot Box. The band leaves
the brass behind and gets back to the music that made them musicians
in the first place... pure balls-out, in-yer-face rock n' roll!
As a tribute to their many influences, Moneyshot's set is made
up of electrified power-chord versions of rock n' roll cult classics.
Not to mention audiences are thrown off guard as they find themselves
jamming out to punkified T.V. theme song favorites. The band splashes
on a vast number of adrenalizing originals to boot. The Moneyshot
sound could be classified as Hard Rock and Pop Punk meets Cajun
Rockabilly and Texas Twang.
BAND
BIOGRAPHY
In the spring
of 1998, native New Orleanian singer/songwriter Scott Bellina
met Idiot Box founder Patrick Gary at a Dallas-based internet
consulting company they were both working for. As a multi-faceted
musician, Gary, trombonist for IB, expressed an interest in starting
a side-project as a bass player. The two of them threw the idea
around but nothing came of it as they were in serious need of
a drummer. In August of that year, Idiot Box, Dallas' Sons of
Ska, were performing a three-hour set at a bar in Deep Ellum and
needed an opening act. Pat consulted Scott about the possibilty
of filling the space provided they find a drummer. They rehearsed
a 45 minute set and found a drummer the day before the show and
called themselves "The Thumbs".
Technically,
the show was a disaster. Without adequate rehearsal time with
the drums, every song ended like a train wreck. The high-point
of the performance was when Scott stepped on his guitar cable
and the "L" shaped plug ripped the jack off his guitar.
Idiot Box, guitarist, Ryan Hughes ran to the rescue and loaned
Scott his Les Paul for the remainder of the song and the show.
But beyond all the mishaps and miscues, there was something very
promising about the band's performance... it was a pure, raw spectacle
of energy and emotion coming from Bellina's pent-up desire to
perform live. No matter what they sounded like... the crowd wanted
more!
Later
that year, the front man of Idiot Box left the group and Scott
was confronted again by Gary as a replacement. Two-months later
Idiot Box played the largest show of their budding musical career...
Geekmeet.com's first major event at the Red Blood Club in Deep
Ellum, Dallas. The band played 2, 45- minute sets for over 600
people. The show was phenomenal.
The
band, still roaring from their high at the geekmeet show, then
played the Battle of The Bands in Athens, TX, and shocked the
town square as they were the first band ever to grace it with
high-steppin' ska horn chaos.
A
week later the band took a major setback as Scott left for London,
England for 6 months. By the time he returned many changes had
occurred within the band. With the exception of Gary, the brass
ensemble was completely dispersed. New horns were added, but time
was needed for them to learn the songs. Nevertheless, disaster
struck again as bass player, Travis Baker, was shipped off to
White Sands, New Mexico for 4 months.
Frustrated,
bored with old material, and anxious to get on a stage again,
IB drummer Blake McElroy consulted Bellina wanting to start something
different. They confronted the other key members of the group
and the tossed the idea around. The very next day, luck took a
turn as they received a call from Geekmeet.com asking them to
be the sole performers for their 1st year anniversary party at
the CopperTank Brewery. Without hesitation, and also without 4
members, Scott said "Sure! But we're not going to be performing
as Idiot Box"... Moneyshot - The American Boogie Gods was
born at that precise moment.
The
band had a week to rehearse 2, 45-minute sets of completely new
material. Bellina unearthed the setlist from "The Thumbs"
one-night-only show, and re-appropriated it with the rest of the
group featuring Pat Gary on bass, Ryan Hughes on lead guitar,
and Blake McElroy on drums... as well as Bellina strapping his
axe back on as a rhythm guitarist.
Moneyshot's
performance at the Geekmeet anniversary was incredible and practically
flawless. Nearly 1000 peope witnessed the show and that got the
ball rolling... the rest will be history!
